Hello Students!!
Welcome! I am excited to share the world of art with you! We'll grow together!
CLASS PRICES
$20.00 for your 1st 2-hour class to try it out and see if it is a good fit for you! If you decide you like it, it's just $100.00 for a series of 4 classes. Please pay by cash at the beginning of class or PayPal.me/julianpalumbo ( no account needed. You can check out as a guest) before the beginning of your first class. Thank you!
DRINKS AND SNACKS
You bet! Bring ‘em!
DATE AND TIME
Fridays from 11am to 1pm.
Optional but recommended: Wet wipes for your hands, some paper towels (not necessarily the whole roll). I like Viva because they don’t leave their own pattern on your work, and they are more like cloth. A sink is provided but it is not convenient for you to jump up everytime hands get dirty!
I recommend you put together a tote bag or something similar item as your art kit to carry all your class supplies so you can grab and go! I use a small carry on type piece of luggage. Stiff sides are good to support papers, etc.
*Don’t forget reading glasses if you use them! That can be a drag if you can’t see details!
MEDIUMS
I've decided after much thought to offer the following artistic mediums to work in for our starting group. I definitely have in mind the fact that whichever one you like will influence the supply list you will need to bring to the first class. If you have some of these supplies you like at home, please bring it. Ask me if you're not sure.
One rule: Buy the best quality in everything that you can afford. With colored sets of pencils or paints, buy the best and biggest set you can afford. More color choices make things easier, faster and more fun for you. We will be mixing colors as we need to as well. Email or text me with questions if you need help!
*I really want to emphasize that you shouldn’t go into debt with your art supplies! If you already have some of the things you need at home, please bring them. If you don’t want to buy the brand I recommend, that’s totally fine!
Go down to the brand, size, price that you are comfortable with! Our goal is to learn while having fun! No pressure, no problem here! 😊 You should have seem what I started with!!
For example: I personally do not work a lot in watercolor, currently. I do plan to do so in the future because I love it. But right now I’m actually using what is considered a student grade brand: Prang. I love these! I also have a small set of Cotman by Winsor Newton for more earthy colors and these are all I need right now.
*Important Note: I believe our first class should start with drawing for everyone no matter which medium you decide to use. Every artist needs to draw and sketch. The concepts learned doing this translate over to every other medium.
PLEASE CHOOSE FROM THE FOLLOWING 3 MEDIUMS WHICH ONE YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK IN, and below it will be your supply list. These items are available at Hobby Lobby. Everyone should purchase or bring the drawing supplies below. We will all be drawing no matter what medium you choose. You can stay with drawing for as long as you like!
DRAWING
-Graphite pencil set of your choice. If budget permits, choose one that ranges from HB (hard) all the way to 8B or higher. The higher, the darker. I can recommend the Faber Castell 9000 set, or the Master's Touch set of 12.
-stumps or tortillions, various sizes, good quality
-Qtips
-Reference photos - ones you'd like to draw/color, ready in the correct size. Beginners should choose a single subject. A strawberry, a rose, a fish, grapes, a balloon. Simple clean surfaces, something you like. I will also have some to choose from, but its better to bring your own. You will be looking at it most of the time!
-Kneaded eraser - the bigger the better
-Tombow Mono eraser – great for correcting details and adding highlights
-Sand paper paddle
-masking tape, easy release, for artists if possible
-Kum Long Point or other good sharpener
-Tracing paper pad
-board for clipping or taping your paper as you work, larger than your paper available at Hobby Lobby.
- transfer paper
-Grumbacher Workable Fixative for pastel, charcoal, and pencil (optional, but recommended)
-Paper:
Strathmore Drawing pad is suitable, 80 lb weight, if you only intend to do graphite drawings for a while.
Strathmore Mixed Media 140lb or higher, 9x12. Best choice if you are a beginner.
or Arches 140lb 9x12 hot press (smooth texture)
or Fabriano hot press 140lb 9x12 Make sure your paper fits and is smaller than your drawing board
We may cut the sheet down to a smaller working size, especially for beginners, to about
5.5x7.5. We’ll get 2 to a page. No rules here though.
-Exacto knife or craft knife
-Scissors
-Cotton balls
COLORED PENCILS
-Prismacolor Premier set of 24 (or bigger), plus 2 open stock reds: 923, 924 Of course, the more colors the better.
-small jar with good fitting lid. I use a small tight fitting Tupperware Type. This will contain your oderless mineral spirits.
-small synthetic taklon brush, no need to be expensive. Filbert shape would be good. To use with oderless mineral spirits.
-electric or hand-held eraser, white only
-kneaded eraser. Bigger is better.
-tracing paper
-transfer paper
-reference photos - photos you'd like to draw, ready in the correct size. Beginners should choose a single subject. A strawberry, a rose, a fish, grapes, a balloon. Simple clean surfaces, something you like. I will also have some to choose from, but it’s better to bring your own. You will be looking at it most of the time!
-Viva paper towels (entire roll not needed, just bring a few) to wipe your brush which will be used with the following:
-Oderless mineral spirits, smallest bottle. Goes a long way. Available in Hobby Lobby
-Kum Long Point sharpener 2 holes, red
-Strathmore Mixed Media 140lb or higher, 9x12.
or Arches 140lb 9x12 hot press (smooth texture)
or Fabriano hot press 140lb 9x12 Make sure your paper fits and is smaller than your drawing board
Note: hot press is smooth which is what we want.
Choose a block pad if possible. The large single sheets will work but it’s a lot of work to cut them down.
- Clip Board to tape down your paper, available in store if you don't have one. This may get wet so choose accordingly.
-Masking Tape. Easy release, made for artists if possible.
WATERCOLOR SET (TO BE USED AS A BASE AND BACKGROUND) PLUS COLORED PENCILS
*Please Note! We will not be learning how to do watercolor art by itself. This will be ONLY used as a background and underpainting for your regular colored pencil work, as it is a nice way to cover your paper in the beginning with your colors
blocked in generally and to create an easy background.
-Watercolor pan set:
At Hobby Lobby I liked the Koi set of 24 or the Cotman (slightly earthier colors, great for outdoors, wildlife) set of 25 by Winsor Newton.
I've not tried Master's Touch watercolors but feel free to use them. Make sure your set has beautiful reds, blues and yellows (primary colors) that you like. Some sets out there strangely lack in reds or some other important color!
-Brushes:
Master's Touch synthetic squirrel size 24, and 10. Hogs Hair round size 2.
I personally use Silver Black Velvet 3/4" oval, #8 round and script no.1. But I have heard great things about Master's Touch brushes and can't wait to try them!
I'd like you to have 3 brushes as you've noticed. Large, medium and small. The tiny one is for details and thin lines.
-Paper:
Strathmore Mixed Media 140lb or higher, 9x12.
or Arches 140lb 9x12 hot press (smooth texture)
or Fabriano hot press 140lb 9x12
Please make sure your paper fits and is smaller than your drawing board.
If not we can cut it down. Beginners will probably work smaller than 9x12.
-Watercolor mixing palette:
Any of your choice. Make sure it has enough room for several colors. The flower shaped ones should be fine.
-2 jars for water
-molotow masking fluid pen (optional) depending on your project you may or may not need it. You can always run out on the floor and buy what you need.
-Colored Pencil Set: Get the highest quality and largest you can, that fits your budget. Don’t invest a lot until you know you love this medium! We can make smaller sets work by mixing colors.
Recommended: Prismacolor set of 24, plus 2 open stock reds: 923, 924 Of course, the more colors the better. There are more professional pencils out there but they must be ordered online. Faber Castell Polychromos and Caran D’Ache Luminance are top of the line, but expensive. These also need to be ordered online usually. Try it with Prismacolor first. Even some pros swear by Prismacolor.
-Paper:

or Arches 140lb 9x12 hot press (smooth texture)
or Fabriano hot press 140lb 9x12
